This is a beautiful love story about a couple who stayed together for more than twenty years, against all odds. Maryanne and Tommy Pilling faced a lot of disbelief from their families and friends in the beginning of their relationship, but they have proved since then true love really does conquer all.
Married in July 1995, this irresistible couple managed to keep the flame burning even now. Their love is pure and strong, and their harmonious marriage should serve as an example to all the couples out there.
However, Maryanne and Tommy have faced some serious difficulties throughout their lives. Since both of them have Down syndrome, for most people it seemed unlikely that the couple would endure for so long.
They almost didn’t get married because the families were skeptic about this unlikely union. Not to mention malicious comments from eyebrow-raisers on every step. Yet, their relationship seemed to be strong from the very start.
The couple met at a training center for people with learning difficulties, and fell in love instantly! Madly in love, the couple spent 18 months together. Then Tommy decided that he had found his soulmate and asked for Maryanne’s hand. Although he proposed with a toy ring, Maryanne’s mother gave him permission to marry her daughter.
She recognized how pure their love was and decided to give them her blessing. Her decision caused a lot of controversy among people from their community.
Linda Newman, Maryanne’s sister explained that they faced a lot of disapproval in the beginning. Yet, the couple stayed together throughout those rough times and proved to be solid as a rock for over two decades.
“Their relationship is so special because it is pure; they don’t understand bad emotions of hate.”
Linda still remembers their beautiful wedding ceremony in July 1995.
She told the anecdote about the time when her mother went with Tommy to help him choose a “proper ring”. They did all they could to organize the big white wedding Maryanne had always wanted.
“That’s exactly what she had. It was a beautiful day. When they walk down the street holding hands, they make a statement but in a good way. Some people stare; they assume people with Down syndrome and learning difficulties can’t get married. But we also get so many lovely messages from people who are inspired by their story. People worried about their own children or grandchildren with Down syndrome get hope from Maryanne and Tommy’s story. I hope that their children can also fall in love and live happily ever after.”
A beautiful wedding was only the beginning of what was to come. Their marriage proved endurable and their love flourishes with each day. Linda shared photos from their wedding day together with touching story about the unconditional love they have cherished.
“They love one another dearly, respect one another and are completely honest.”
Maryanne also remembers her big day and every time she mentions Tommy, her eyes glow with joy and happiness.
“My wedding was the best day of my life. I was shocked when Tommy proposed, but I didn’t have to think twice about saying yes. Tommy and I never argue. I love my husband very much. He is my best friend.”
